鞣本義通“蹂”，指蹂躏，即暴力欺壓、踐踏。鞣酸指有機化合物，淡黃色粉末，有微臭。工業上用來制墨水和鞣皮革，可入藥。亦稱“單甯”、“單甯酸”。制造皮革時，用栲膠、魚油等使獸皮柔軟。
