甚至在贈呂恩女士《貓》時，徐悲鴻幽默地自诩："人家都說我的馬好，其實我的貓比馬畫得好。"徐悲鴻在用西方寫實觀念改造傳統花鳥畫的同時，又特别注意保持中國傳統“得其天真”的美學觀，發揮宣紙、彩墨、毛筆等工具材料的特殊性能，使兩花貓身上的色澤墨暈，呈現出一種油畫所不可能有的水靈而潤澤的風緻，形神兼備，神采如活。
