父親節起源于美國, 1909年,華盛頓一位叫布魯斯多德的夫人,在她慶賀母親節的時候突然産生了一個設立父親節的念頭。于是給當地的教會寫信,建議把每年6月的第三個星期日定為父親節,該建議獲得了教會的同意。當年的6月,人們便慶祝了第一個父親節。當時凡是父親還健在的人都在胸前佩戴一朵紅玫瑰花以表達對父親的敬意;而父親已故去的人,則佩戴一朵白玫瑰花,以此表達對父親的無限懷念和哀思。
