關于“水”的俚語

in hot water

"in hot water"按字面的意思是：在熱水中。當外國人和你說“I'm in hot water.”，你千萬不要以為他大夏天在泡溫泉。在口語中，“in hot water”是一個俚語，指某個人遇到了麻煩，身處于某種困境之中。

［例］

I didn’t study for the exam, so I am in hot water.

test the water

"test the water"這句話最早來源于媽媽們在給小寶寶洗澡時，通常會先用手試一試水溫，避免太燙或太冷。後來這句話就延伸為在做一件事情之前，先試一試，即：試探；摸底。
